Description

Basic information

  • Latin name: Clematis mandshurica (it should definitely be noted that it is sometimes also referred to as Clematis terniflora var. mandshurica) — these terms are used as synonyms.

  • Plant type: perennial climber with small, star-shaped white flowers.

Growing conditions

  • Position: Prefers a sunny position (at least 6 hours a day) or partial shade, a plant whose "head is in the sun, feet in the shade".

  • Soil: Humus-rich, well-drained soil. Like many clematis, it can be sensitive to excessive moisture in the root zone. Soil pH 5.5–6.5

  • Height and spread: Can reach approximately 1.5–2 m in height and about 1.5 m in spread.

  • Recommendation: Mound sand around the plant’s root collar, mixed 1:1 with deciduous tree ash. This protects the clematis from fungal diseases and rots. It can be mulched with neutralised peat or pine bark mulch.
  • Pruning: Belongs to the third pruning group; prune in April, leaving 30–50 cm shoots above the ground.
  • Fertilising: In spring, scatter and work into the soil around the plant a slow-release fertiliser Osmocot 4-6mēn., or a complex NPK fertiliser.
  • Blooming period: July to September, on the current year’s shoots — the small white flowers form “cloud-like drifts” of bloom.

  • Flowers: Fragrant, 1.5–2 cm in diameter, star-shaped. The flower fragrance is particularly pronounced in a sunny location.

Use in the garden

  • Thanks to its abundant flowering and fragrance, it is a good choice for planting by terraces, pergolas, or as a specimen by a sturdy support in the garden, in beds, as well as by a fence or house wall.
