The oldest large-flowered variety, bred in England in 1858. Healthy, hardy and very floriferous. From July to October it is covered with dark, violet-blue flowers. Particularly useful for planting by fences, pergolas or under trees.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE: Medium-sized flowers, dia. 10-13 cm, slightly nodding, composed of 4 (sometimes 5 or 6) diamond-shaped or oval, dark purple-violet to dark blue sepals, grey-violet beneath. They are highlighted by beige stamens on greenish filaments. Flowers very abundantly in June-July, then less abundantly until September. Leaves entire, compound, ternate or single.
HOW IT GROWS: climbs by means of leaf stalks. It grows strongly, reaching 3-4 m in height.
