Description

General information

  • Name: “Taiga” (a hybrid of Clematis Florida “Taiga”, registered as PP 27,591)

  • The variety was bred by Shigeaki Ochiai in Japan and has been on sale since 2016.

  • Notable features: very decorative, double flowers, violet-blue with yellow-green or yellowish tips.

Growing conditions and care

  • Height: About 2 m and 0.8 m wide.

  • Site selection: In a sunny location (at least 6 hours a day), or partial shade. It is recommended that the flowers are in the sun, but the roots shaded: “head in the sun, feet in the shade”.

  • Soil: Humus-rich, well-drained soil, pH 5.5-6.5

  • Blooming: Begins flowering in July and continues blooming abundantly until September.

  • Belongs to the third pruning group: Flowers on the current year's shoots, so spring pruning is recommended.

  • Pruning recommendation: In early spring (mid or late April), cut back the shoots to 20-50 cm above ground level.

  • Recommendation: Heap sand around the plant's root collar, mixed in a 1:1 ratio with deciduous tree ash. This protects clematis from fungal diseases and rots. It can be mulched with neutralised peat or pine bark mulch.

  • Fertilising: In spring, spread slow-release fertiliser Osmocot 4-6mēn. around the plant and work it into the soil, or use a compound NPK fertiliser.

Use in the garden

  • Excellent for a fence, house wall, terrace, arch, on a balcony in a container, or with a sturdy support as a specimen plant in a flower bed.
