Here is information about the variety Pierre de Ronsard® (also often called EDEN ROSE®85) — its characteristics, growing requirements and other important factors.
Basic information
This rose was bred in France by the variety breeder Meilland International and was first introduced commercially in 1985.
Its registered variety name is ‘MEIviolin’, and in trade the names “Pierre de Ronsard®”, “Eden Rose® 85”, “Eden Climber™” are often used.
This variety received the “World’s Favourite Rose” award (2006) — named by the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) in recognition of the rose.
Appearance and characteristics
Flowers: very double (usually 55–65 petals) in an old rose style, creamy white or cream-toned with a soft pink/deeper pink edging in the centre.
Flower diameter approximately 8–10 cm.
Fragrance: moderate or light — not very strong.
Growth habit and shoot structure: as a climbing rose or tall shrub — can reach about 2–3 m in height (in some places up to ~3 m) and ~1–1.5 m or more in width, depending on the growing method.
Leaves: dark green, glossy, healthy-looking.
Blooming: repeat-flowering throughout the season, from spring to autumn.
Growing requirements and care
Choose a sunny or partly shaded location for planting. Good soil with good drainage is important.
As a climbing rose it can be used on a wall, arch or column — this variety is very well suited to that.
It is useful to prune out old, diseased or weakened shoots in spring, and also to tidy the growth structure.
For wintering: the variety shows good hardiness, but in colder regions it is advisable to provide winter protection.
Where to use it in the garden
As a main accent on a wall or pergola — it looks beautiful when trained as a climbing rose.
In group plantings as a shrub rose.
In border plantings or as a romantic hedge.
As a source of cut flowers — suitable for floral arrangements.
