Description

Here is collected information about the rose variety “Bienenweide® Bernstein” (German: Bienenweide® Bernstein, bred by Rosen Tantau) — its characteristics, growing requirements and possible uses.

Characteristics rosen-tantau.com/rose-bernstein

  • This variety is part of the “Bienenweide®” series — roses specially developed to attract bees (and other pollinating insects).

  • Name: Bienenweide® Bernstein (English “Bees’ Paradise Rose® Bernstein”).

  • Flower colour: apricot/amber shades with a darker centre.

  • Flower shape: cup-shaped, about 12 cm in diameter.

  • Growth habit: healthy, vigorous, bushy, compact. Height up to about 120 cm

  • Origin: New for 2023 from Rosen Tantau.

  • Additional note: it is emphasised that this variety is suitable for habitats where pollinator support is needed.

Growing requirements and use

  • Site: prefers a sunny position or light partial shade (sunlight is beneficial).

  • Soil: well-drained, humus-rich, moderately fertile — avoid prolonged waterlogging. (These are general recommendations for this series.)

  • Plant size: up to about 120 cm tall. Although many varieties in the “Bienenweide®” series are described as being smaller (for example 40-60 cm) — 120 cm is stated for this variety.

  • Care: light pruning after the first flush is recommended to encourage repeat flowering (this is generally typical for the series). (Although this point is not always specifically emphasised for “Bernstein”.)

  • Use: This rose can be used as a standalone shrub in a group, as part of shrub rose plantings, in more naturalistic landscapes, and in pollinator-friendly garden areas. It is especially well suited to gardens where not only visual decoration but also support for pollinators is desired.

Why choose this variety?

  • For pollinators: as the flowers are designed with easily accessible nectar, it is a good choice for gardens with a nature-friendly approach.

  • Aesthetics: apricot/amber colouring, compact in composition — beautiful both individually and in groups.

  • Health: roses in the “Bienenweide®” series are mentioned as relatively disease-resistant, with healthy foliage.
