“Herzogin Christiana®”
General information
This variety is a modern floribunda / shrub rose form, bred by W. Kordes’ Söhne in Germany and introduced in 2013. rosen.de/…grant-roses/herzogin-christiana
In trade it is usually called “Herzogin Christiana®”.
It is part of the Kordes “Parfuma” collection — a group of varieties with an emphasis on fragrant flowers.
The variety received ADR certification (Germany) in 2015, confirming high disease resistance and good garden performance.
Appearance and characteristics
Flowers: fully double (“pompon” type) flowers with a pink-cream tint, which in sun or depending on the light may appear very pale pink to almost white.
Flower diameter about 8-9 cm.
Flowers are borne in clusters (5-10 flowers on one stem) — several inflorescences form, making the flowering abundant.
Height and width: the bush usually reaches about 70-80 cm in height and 40-60 cm in width.
Fragrance: very strong and fruity — notes of lemon, champagne bubbles, raspberries, fresh apples after rain.
Resistance: Very good resistance to black spot and powdery mildew — thanks to ADR certification.
Planting and care
Location: Best in a sunny to partially shaded place. Soil — humus-rich, well drained.
Planting distance: about 40-50 cm between bushes is recommended to ensure ventilation.
Winter hardiness: Considered good (suitable for several temperate climates).
Flowering: From spring to autumn, with repeat flowering.
Care: Standard rose care routine — fertilise in early spring, remove faded flowers, ensure good ventilation, avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Uses
Excellent for group plantings in rose gardens, as well as in pots/terrace plantings, thanks to its compact habit.
Why choose it?
Very attractive aesthetically: fully double flowers, a soft pink-cream colour, romantic appearance.
Fragrance — distinctly fruity and rich, which is not so common in all floribundas.
Disease resistant — less care and fewer problems compared with weaker varieties.
Suitable for the Latvian climate (with appropriate winter hardiness) and garden conditions.
Possible drawbacks / things to pay attention to
As with some strongly fragrant flower varieties — good air circulation should be ensured in the garden to avoid moisture-related problems.
If the site chosen is darker or more humid, the abundance of flowering or the intensity of fragrance may decrease.
The flowers are slightly more sensitive to rain and moisture — flower clusters may be damaged during heavy rain.
