Description

Basic information rosesabc.com/en/michelangelo

  • This rose variety is called Rosa ‘Michelangelo’ (registered under the name ‘Meitelov’).

  • Bred in France by Meilland International in 1997.

  • Belongs to the Romantica® series (modern shrub roses with hybrid tea characteristics).

Appearance and characteristics

  • Flower colour: bright yellow to lemon yellow; over time the petals may become lighter.

  • Flower shape: double (about 45 petals) with a cupped/goblet-shaped form

  • Flower size: large flowers – about 11-13 cm in diameter.

  • Bush size: about 100-150 cm tall and approximately 50-75 cm wide.

  • Fragrance: moderate, sweet-tart with notes of honey and spice.

  • Foliage: dark green, semi-glossy, healthy-looking.

  • Blooming: repeat-flowering – blooms from early summer until late autumn if properly cared for.

  • Disease resistance: good resistance to typical rose diseases.

Growing requirements

  • The site should be sunny (at least 6-8 hours a day) with well-drained, improved soil.

  • Feed generously in spring and continue moderate feeding in summer if you want regular flowering.

  • In winter conditions, the variety is hardy to ~ -23 °C (USDA zone ~6) — however, young plants may need mulching or protection.

  • Regular removal of spent flowers (deadheading) is recommended to encourage the formation of new buds.

Where and how to use

  • Excellent for flower beds, border plantings or as a specimen shrub in the garden, where its colour and form can stand out.

  • Also suitable for cutting – the large flowers and long stems make it useful as a decorative cut flower in a vase.

  • If you plan to plant it in Latvia, choose a place without prolonged moisture stagnation and with good air movement (to avoid moisture-related diseases).

Notes and recommendations

  • As the flower colour may vary depending on the weather (hot weather can make the shade lighter), it is worth bearing in mind that the first blooms may differ from those in later seasons. (Other users have mentioned that their ‘Michelangelo’ flowers became creamy or pale in hot weather.)

  • Considerable attention has been drawn to the fact that there is also another variety named „Michelangelo” (bred by McGredy) — so be sure to check the variety name and breeder carefully.
