Description

Basic information

  • This rose variety — Vulcano® (with the registration code KORcolipas) — is a hybrid tea rose variety bred by the German breeder ~W. Kordes’ Söhne in 2019.

  • The shrub reaches approximately 70 cm in height and about 40 cm in width.

  • The flowers are 7-8 cm in diameter, fully double, elegant, and formed in small clusters (1-3 flowers per stem).

  • Flower colour: cherry red with a yellow or orange tint on the reverse side (underside of the petals).

  • The fragrance is light to medium in intensity.

  • Blooms repeatedly through the season.

  • Very good disease resistance — especially to black spot and powdery mildew. Very suitable for certain regions.

Growing characteristics

  • Location: it is best to choose a place that receives full sun or almost full sun — this variety performs best in such conditions. (Based on standard rose requirements.)

  • Soil: well-drained, compost-enriched, fertile soil.

  • Planting distance: given its compact habit, with a height of 70 cm and width of 40 cm, a spacing of 50 cm between plants will be sufficient.

  • Care: regular watering, mulching, and feeding in spring and summer will help maintain healthy growth and active blooming. After flowering, remove spent blooms to encourage repeat flowering.

  • Winter protection: depending on the weather conditions, mulching the soil around the roots should definitely be considered, and sometimes light protection against frost damage.

  • Suitable for growing in pots; given its compact habit and disease resistance, this variety can also be grown in pots on a balcony or terrace.

Suitability for the region

In Latvia’s climate (with a colder winter season), it should be taken into account that this variety was developed in Germany — it is quite hardy, but the winter protection mentioned above will still be beneficial. If planting outdoors, make sure the site is not too exposed to wind and that the roots are covered for winter.
During the growing season, sufficient sunlight, good ventilation, and regular care will help prevent disease outbreaks.

Recommendations

  • If you want a pronounced fragrance, please note that this variety is not strongly fragrant — it has a light or slightly noticeable fragrance.

  • Colour may be affected by light and weather conditions — in sunny weather the colour will be more intense.

  • If planting in a pot, choose a larger pot (e.g. 30 + cm in diameter), quality substrate, and regular feeding to promote blooming.

  • Care: make sure it is not standing in water, as this can encourage root rot; on the other hand, a site that is too shady may reduce the number of flowers.

  • At the end of the season (in late autumn), carry out light pruning and proper preparation for winter.
